Since the previous thatched building was destroyed by Cyclone Freddie in 2018, the school has operated from beneath a tree.
boNGO supports the centre through regular supervision visits, ongoing teacher training, teacher salaries and daily meals for the children. Yet, without classrooms, desks or safe shelter, education remains dependent on the weather and on the resilience and commitment of parents and teachers.
Despite these challenges, the community has shown extraordinary commitment to its children’s future. They have contributed a piece of land measuring 59m by 49m, valued at several million Malawi Kwacha – a heartfelt investment in creating a safe and lasting place for their children to learn and grow.
Thanks to the generous donations from the people of Frauenfeld in Switzerland Phase 1 preparations begun in June 2026 for the construction of a new preschool.
This includes road maintenance with improved access to the site for materials, land clearing and the removal or boulders.
The next phase will see the mobilisation of river sand/quarry for constructions works, the digging of the fence foundation to demarcate the school boundary and construction of temporary stores and toilets.
The vision is to transform this land into a community childcare centre that will provide:
• Early childhood education in safe, structured classrooms.
• Nutrition and health support to ensure children grow strong and healthy.
• Relief for working parents, enabling them to farm, trade, and build livelihoods without fear for their children’s safety.
• Community development through local job creation and shared responsibility.
This project directly aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals:
